Pharmacology and prescribing of medicinal products

The aim of the course is to prepare a nurse to write prescriptions independently and to use legal regulations binding in this field. To get acquainted with current legal acts and procedures concerning prescription of medicinal products and auxiliary materials.

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE – A STUDENT KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS:

1. influence of disease processes on drug metabolism and elimination,

2. major adverse drug reactions, including those resulting from drug interactions,

3. principles of issuing prescriptions within the scope of medical orders completion,

4. groups of drugs, active substances contained in drugs, forms and ways of administration.

5. foodstuffs for particular nutritional purposes

6. types and principles of ordering diagnostic tests

SKILLS – A STUDENT IS ABLE TO:

1. use pharmaceutical reference books and databases of medicinal products,

2. issue prescriptions for drugs necessary for the continuation of treatment, within the scope of medical orders.

3. prepare prescription forms of medicinal substances and foodstuffs for particular nutritional purposes ordered by a doctor

4. select foodstuffs for particular nutritional purposes and the skills enabling issuance of prescriptions for foodstuffs for particular nutritional purposes, necessary for the continuation of treatment, within the framework of medical orders and the ability to provide information on their use

5. recognize indications for specific diagnostic tests and have the skills to issue referrals for specific diagnostic tests

6. prepare prescription forms of therapeutic substances in consultation with a physician or upon his/her instructions
