ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 5.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.
Language: English

Aims of the course:

1. Introducing students to the basic knowledge of technical mechanics in the field of statics.

2. Developing of skills by students of basic methods of solving practical problems in statics.

3. Understanding by students of mechanical phenomena in nature and technology.

4. Developing students' skills of responsible interaction and communication in a group.

KNOWLEDGE – A STUDENT KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS:

1. elements of vector algebra, terminology and notation, product of a vector and scalar, vector addition, angle between two vectors;

2. the term of the resultant force (total force);

3. reduction of an arbitrary force system;

4. equilibrium equations of various systems (planar convergent, spatial convergent, planar arbitrary, planar parallel and spatial parallel);

5. the term of a beam and a truss;

6. laws of friction, including the term of the coefficient of friction;

7. the term of the center of mass.

SKILLS – A STUDENT IS ABLE TO:

8. calculate the sum of vectors, the dot and vector product of vectors;

9. calculate the resultant of arbitrary of system of forces;

10. determine support reactions for equal systems of forces, including: convergent system of forces (2D and 3D), arbitrary system of forces (2D and 3D), parallel system of forces (2D and 3D);

11. calculate the support reaction and internal forces in complex systems, the support reactions of beams and the forces in the bars of a statically determinate planar truss;

12. solve problems of statics with having regard to friction forces;

13. determine the center of mass of a system of material points and center of the rigid body.
